Please use the Ship-Source Oil Pollution Fund to remove the 13000 liters of oil & solvents aboard the abandoned vessel Viki Lyne II, before she sinks and fouls beautiful Ladysmith Harbour

The Issue

After she was abandoned, a Coast Guard a survey was commissioned in 2012. It recommended that all the oil aboard Viki Lyne II be removed before she sinks, & that the vessel then be disassembled and scrapped. In 2014 about 2/3 of that oil was pumped out. The Coast Guard survey said she was expected to sink, sooner rather than later, with "only rust scale and marine growth" preventing the entry of water at the moment.

Meanwhile the SSOP fund has $405 in it. Administration of the fund cost $1.2 million last year, while only $141,000 was used in cleanups.

In the past five years two other cleanups in this area have been undertaken: they involved much smaller volume of contaminants.

The Town of Ladysmith, the local Stz'uminus First Nation, and the Ladysmith Maritime Society, as well as the Nanaimo-Cowichan member of parliament Jean Crowder have all tried unsuccessfully to move the Federal Government.

Ladysmith Harbour is fabulously beautiful, with an oyster fishery, fragile sea birds and mammals, and delightful beaches. It has been the focus of increasing work in recent years to remedy a history of abuse by coal barons and industrialists. The Honorable Minister could make this ounce of prevention happen, and prevent this impending disaster
