Save the play coordinators at Princess Margaret Hospital - their services are essential!
The issue
Play coordinators throughout Princess Margaret Childrens Hospital in Perth will be made redundant from end of April 2016. Their positions have been deemed unnecessary now and in the new Perth Childrens Hospital.
We the undersigned believe play coordinators play an essential role in the delivery of health services to our children. Their title does not reflect the degree of assistance they give our children! They assist health staff deliver difficult, painful and invasive procedures through play, distraction and support, preventing potential mental and physical harm to both staff and children. They interact with children of all ages, reducing the anxiety and trauma associated with many treatments. They assist families by engaging with children for short periods to allow parents of inpatients "time out" to have a quick shower or meet with doctors - something nursing staff simply don't have the time to do. They keep children occupied outside school hours or not of school age, making their stay manageable for the child and the health staff.
Without play coordinators our children will likely suffer higher anxiety, which can result in long term mental health issues as a result of their treatment.
Stop cutting services from our children's hospitals and making an already difficult time for families even more difficult.
