International Literature in the English Syllabus

International Literature in the English Syllabus
The issue
We need a greater presence of international literature within the English syllabus. International literature should be a high priority in text selection for the English syllabus, and that particularly in years below Year 12, without mandation, such texts are not often selected. As a follow-up, the tabulation of data regarding texts selected by schools in NSW to determine the compliance to the NESA syllabus regarding international literature and a diverse range of Indigenous and Asian perspectives are truly engaged in needs to occur.
There needs to be a clearer mandate, either for the necessity of, or the opposite, of a greater focus of international literature in the NESA syllabus. This data could also establish clearer trends of text selection along geographical lines, so for instance, whether rural areas are engaging with international texts at a similar rate to urban schools.
