The Issue
Kumbakonam (KMU)is one of the most important Pilgrim and tourist Centre in Tamilnadu, locted in the Tiruchchirappalli Division of Southern Railway. Famous Mahamaham Festival which attracts over 50 lakshs of pilgrims is celebrated in this town once in twelve years. It stores hundreds of celebrated temples of all form of worship such as saivait, vaishnavait and Madhva tradition. The jeevasamathi of His Holiness Shri Vijeyendira theerthar - the paramaguru of Saint Ragavendra is located in this town. Kumbakonam is also a commercial hub of erstwhile composite Thanjavur and Ariyalur districts. Kumbakonam belong to A grade category and is connected with other parts of the country through rail. About 5000 passengers use the railway station here daily. The station now has only two retiring rooms which is booked through online. The dormitory kept as crew rest room after completion of gauge conversion between Thanjavur and Kumbakonam has not been restored to passenger usage though there is no need for crew rest room now. This 'A' Grade station has a nicely built Officer Rest House with all necessary facilities. But lack with proper retiring rooms for the passengers. SInce people from many part of the country and abroad visit Kumbakonam, number of retiring rooms may be increased to 10 from the present strength of 2. The station has vast land bank and hence a full fledged Rail Yatri Nivas may also be built here for the benefit of passengers.Your signing the petition this station will get additional retiring rooms benefitting thousands of rail users.
