Tooth paste is used by 2/3rd of the world’s population on a daily basis. Toothpaste is first put in a plastic tube and then packed in a paper box. This box not only makes the toothpaste more expensive but is discarded as soon we begin using the toothpaste. The box in which the toothpaste is packed serves no purpose whatsoever. Every year 900 million boxes are produced only in the US. So in India this figure will be much higher. From the poor to the rich, almost all use toothpaste.

In Iceland which is the world’s second most environmentally friendly country, the citizens decided to buy toothpaste that came without the outer cardboard packing. The objective was to save the planet from getting more polluted and a step towards adopting an environmentally friendly lifestyle. Looking at the consumption pattern of the consumers toothpaste brands were forced to supply toothpastes without the outer box. Today 90% of the toothpastes sold in Iceland are without boxes.

Sir, our request to you is direct all the companies selling toothpastes to do so without the outer boxes. Outer boxes unnecessarily add to the garbage of the country, trees are cut to make paper so lesser the paper consumption lesser the trees that will be cut. Some of the boxes come coated with a thin layer of plastic film thereby adding to plastic pollution.

Doing away with the boxes will be a step forward in reducing garbage, reducing pressure on our natural resources and helping nature. It will help in our Hon’ble PM’s Swatch Bharat Abhiyan.
