The Issue

Support Equal Opportunities for Maryland Homeschooled Athletes

Currently, homeschooled students in Maryland are prohibited from participating in any extracurricular activities, including sports, through their local public schools. This year, we made another attempt to change that through HB1185, but unfortunately, the bill stalled once again.

We didn’t give up.

After countless hours of research and phone calls, we’ve shifted our focus to advocating for a change in COMAR 13A.06.03.02A—the state regulation that governs participation in interscholastic athletics. Our goal is to allow homeschooled high schoolers the opportunity to play sports alongside their public school peers.

We now have a virtual meeting scheduled in mid-May with Zachary Hands, the Executive Director of the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), to explore this new path forward.

We’re asking for your support.

Some of our children are incredibly talented athletes who deserve equal access to scouting and scholarship opportunities. More than 35 states already allow homeschoolers to participate in public school sports—it’s time Maryland does too.

Here’s how you can help:

• Sign and share the petition if you haven’t already.

• Contact your local Board of Education and ask if they support this change.

• Reach out to your local delegates and senators—let them know this matters to you and your family.
