Thanks to you, today The Home Depot announced they will ban the sale of dangerous paint strippers in their stores by the end of the year! This is a big win and huge market impact -- they have more than 2,200 stores across the United States, Canada, and Mexico! Will you help us thank The Home Depot for taking action to protect consumers? *** Thank The Home Depot on Facebook by sharing this post: http://bit.ly/2lnyEEZ *** Thank The Home Depot on Twitter by Retweeting this: http://bit.ly/2MBF9k6 And THANK YOU! Without you, we couldn’t make this happen. These commitments come just a few weeks after Lowe’s became the first retailer to announce a ban on these dangerous products, in response to our national campaign. More than 60 families have lost loved ones to acute exposure to methylene chloride since 1980, including four since the beginning of 2017. The chemical is also linked to lung and liver cancer, neurotoxicity, and reproductive toxicity. NMP impacts fetal development and can cause miscarriage and stillbirth. In January 2017, the EPA proposed banning paint strippers containing these chemicals under the newly strengthened Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), citing the products’ unreasonable risks to human health. Deferring to the wishes of the chemical industry, the agency shelved the proposed ban soon after Scott Pruitt was confirmed as EPA Administrator and the agency has taken no action in 18 months. In May, two days after EPA Administrator Pruitt met with families who have lost loved ones due to methylene chloride exposure in the past 18 months, the EPA announced that it would finalize a methylene chloride rule. However, the agency has revealed few details on its planned regulatory action, offered no timeline, and has taken no action on NMP. We continue to urge EPA to finalize a full ban immediately, and urge other retailers like Walmart, Ace Hardware and Auto Zone to join these other retailers in banning these dangerous products in the meantime. Let’s hope they act soon, and for now, let’s celebrate this big victory!
