Petition updateHollywood Residents Opposed to High Rise on Public Land at Azalea TerraceIMPORTANT: Nov 10 6 PM. Commission in the Community: Young Circle Arts Park.

Nov 10, 2021

Some residents have heard the following claims:

Residents' taxes will go down, the land will be greener, open space will not be affected, a private condo is a public use, there will be no shadows from the 30 story building, no additional cars or traffic, restaurant customers and employees won’t take up any parking spaces, no lights in condo windows will disorient turtles, it won’t encourage future high rises to be built, and police officers and firefighters are going to rain from the sky! … IF residents just let them build this one particular skyscraper on their public oceanfront land. (Some commissioners also claim that the opposition is the “vocal minority.”) Do you believe all these claims?
It’s important that Hollywood residents show up tonight Nov 10th for Commission in the Community. Your mayor and commissioners will all be there, and you will be able to tell them how you feel about a skyscraper on your public oceanfront land.
Commission in the Community: Young Circle Arts Park at 6 pm November 10th. Bring a blanket or lawn chair. Uber if you can.

Email the city so that your opposition becomes public record (tell them if you're a Hollywood resident): JLevy@hollywoodfl.org, CShuham@hollywoodfl.org, LSherwood@hollywoodfl.org, KBiederman@hollywoodfl.org, TCallari@hollywoodfl.org, LAnderson@hollywoodfl.org, AGruber@hollywoodfl.org

You can also show up to speak at Citizen Comments at City Hall at 5 PM on November 17th. 2nd floor. Bring a mask and an ID.

"The electors shall have the power, in accordance with the provisions of this Article 5, to approve or reject at the polls any measure passed by the commission or submitted by the commission to a vote of the electors, such power being known as a referendum."
The City Commission has not voted yet. But if they vote to pass the condo proposal, voters can override this decision with a referendum. Residents have organized a public referendum petition and will begin collecting signatures, just in case.

There are many residents who have volunteered to collect signatures.
Petition signers must be registered voters in the city of Hollywood.
Petitions must be printed DOUBLE SIDED with the notary on the back of each one (each page will need to be notarized).
Must be NEATLY written. The city clerk will have to verify each signature and voter.
The address is very important. No spelling mistakes.

Who's been removing NO CONDO signs from yards? Makes you wonder.

The developer has a pro-condo website and FB page and has been deleting/hiding/reporting public feedback from residents. How can they claim that they welcome public input if they delete all the public input and report residents to Facebook?

Commissioner Shuham and the City Manager have admitted that we can make improvements to the public facilities, community center, dunes, and park without a private condo tower. We do not need it and residents don't want it.

More on these 4 acres:

3 acres of this public land has deed restrictions for "open space, park, recreation, and public purpose." The President of the Hollywood Historical Society, Clive Taylor, states that the land was given to the city 47 years ago with the promise that this land would remain open space to the public in order to allow a variance of higher density for The Summit condominiums on the neighboring property. The city only paid $10 for this land based on those restrictions. The higher density would never have been allowed if they knew that someday, the city of Hollywood would betray the deed and allow even higher density than what it was traded for.

Land and Water Conservation Funds were used to purchase an ENTIRE ACRE parcel of land. It includes the current Harry Berry Park AND the parking area west of Harry Berry Park. There are 43,560 square feet in an acre. This means that 43,560 square feet are protected and can't be modified or changed or converted in any way without first getting approval. The approval would be an application process as well as a public comment period. The DEP has now notified the City that this would be considered a Conversion of Use and would need approval from the National Park Service.
