STAND UP AGAINST DECEPTIVE MISINFORMATION AND ANTI-CHOICE LEGISLATION IN NEW JERSEY

The Issue

18 New Jersey state legislators are distorting reality, promoting deceptive misinformation about abortion, and not representing the pro-choice majority of New Jersey by sponsoring the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.

This bill would give legal protections to a fetus "born alive" as a result of a failed abortion and force medical professionals to perform unnecessary procedures to avoid legal repercussions.  Alabama just passed this exact born-alive bill, and it is part of a dangerous anti-choice political strategy to redefine the term “person” to include an embryo or fetus and to intentionally mislead and affect public opinion on safe, legal abortion.

KNOW THE FACTS:  92% of legal abortions are performed during the first trimester.  Late-term abortions are extremely rare. Only 1.3% occur after 21 weeks, and those are due to fetal abnormalities or the health of the mother. Most late-term abortions are conducted with the knowledge that the baby is unable to live after birth. There are no ”born-alive” abortions. And there is no data supporting that healthy, viable babies are being terminated.

This legislation is irresponsible.  It is based on lies and a misinformation campaign, promoting anti-choice rhetoric and aimed at shaming women and criminalizing doctors for a practice that doesn’t exist in medicine or reality.  Legislators should instead focus on facts and on expanding access to reproductive healthcare for all women.

We ask the following 18 State Assembly Members, who are sponsoring this bill, to withdraw their support immediately so this bill can be withdrawn completely.
