Opening of Hollister District public schools

The Issue

Per California’s tier guidance for loosening COVID-19 restrictions, elementary schools may open once the designated county has been in the substantial (Red) tier for two weeks. The Hollister School Board of trustees has voted to approve the extension of campus closure until January 3rd, 2021 in San Benito County, when the return date could be two weeks from the original Red Tier initiation of October 13th. This decision has the potential to prolong detrimental emotional and educational impacts that our students are currently facing from distance learning.

We, the parents, are concerned for our children’s mental and education health, who urge our school board leaders to act now to open the elementary schools in concurrence with the California COVID19.CA.GOV blueprint for reducing COVID-19 in the state with revised criteria for loosening restrictions on activities. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) wrote an article updated on July 23rd that reiterates the importance of reopening America’s schools this fall due to the lower risks of school aged children contracting and spreading COVID-19. Schools continue to provide education instruction, support the development of social and emotional skills, creates a safe environment for learning away from neglect and abuse, addresses nutritional needs, and facilitates physical activities.
