Holland & Barrett - Bring back the Wheat Free Super Lactase

The Issue

After stocking a wheat-free version of their Super Lactase (Milk and Dairy Digestant) for a significant amount of time, Holland & Barrett have removed this product from sale and replaced it with the original wheat containing product.

This decision was made with what seems to be zero consideration of a large portion of the target market of this product.

Coeliac disease is one of the leading causes of secondary lactose intolerance. People with Coeliac Disease must stay on a strict gluten free diet - avoiding wheat, barley, rye and non-gluten-free oats. Therefore, adding wheat back into the ingredients of Super Lactase tablets makes them unsuitable for Coeliac Disease Sufferers.

It seems however, that negative reviews of individuals without coeliac disease (but with lactose intolerance) have swayed the opinion of H&B to bring back the old recipe. It is arguably cruel to have made this product accessible to coeliacs, letting them enjoy dairy once more, only to take it away with no notice.

Therefore, we ask Holland & Barrett to either -

- consider brining back the wheat-free recipie for all stock

or

- simultaneously stock the wheat free and non-wheat-free products

Given the negative reviews generated by the wheat-free recipe, we also ask Holland & Barrett to -

- research a gluten-free alternative that are as likeable as the wheat containing option, but accessible to those with Coeliac Disease.

Coeliac UK have been approached for support on communicating with Holland & Barrett.
