The Issue

Living by the River Conwy has been a real joy for me, offering moments of tranquility, beauty, and connection with nature. However, that joy has been tainted by the disturbing reality of witnessing sewage being discharged into its waters. It's a heartbreaking sight that has forced me to stop swimming in the river I love, and I no longer allow my dog to swim in the river. This is not just my story; it's a reality for many living near waterways across the UK.

The health of our waterways and seas is under severe threat, and it’s time we take immediate action. For far too long, water companies have evaded accountability, dumping sewage and chemicals into our rivers and seas, contributing massively to the pollution crisis we face today. This negligence not only threatens our natural ecosystems but also poses a significant risk to public health and the enjoyment of nature which many of us hold dear.

Alarmingly, the Environment Agency reported that in 2020 alone, there were over 400,000 incidents of discharge into waterways, a trend that continues to rise. This is an environmental crime committed against both our planet and our communities. The UK government must act decisively; it's time to make water companies liable for their actions. We need legislation that holds these companies responsible, ensuring they invest in infrastructure improvements that prevent pollution and protect our waterways.

We urge the UK government to implement strict penalties and regulatory measures that compel water companies to adhere to environmental standards and engage in restorative practices. By enforcing accountability and transparency, we can begin to repair the damage and safeguard our natural heritage for future generations.

Our rivers and seas are precious. They are the lifelines of our ecosystems, recreational havens, and vital resources. Let's protect them with the earnestness and urgency they deserve. Sign this petition to demand action from the UK government to hold water companies accountable, to ensure they become custodians of our natural treasures rather than contributors to their decline. Together, we can inspire change for the conscience of our nation.
