For years, TSA PreCheck passengers have enjoyed shorter lines and fewer hassles—while the rest of us, especially low-income travelers, parents with young kids, seniors, and people with disabilities, have been stuck removing our shoes and enduring outdated procedures.

Now that the TSA is phasing out mandatory shoe removal at some airports, this could finally be a step toward fairer, more humane travel experiences for everyone. But the change is uneven, and without clear timelines or nationwide standards, it risks creating even more confusion and unequal treatment at security checkpoints.

We’re calling on the TSA to implement this change across all airports—not just for the privileged few. At the same time, we urge the agency to ensure that any security updates are backed by strong evidence and don’t compromise safety. Travelers should never have to choose between dignity and protection.
