Hold the University of Bath accountable
The Issue
There are deeply concerning rumours circulating that the Rugby Club’s initiation may have involved the alleged spiking of Bath Spa student’s drinks. While I cannot personally verify whether this initiation took place or whether the allegation is accurate, it has still caused mass amounts of fear and anger across student communities. These concerns cannot simply be dismissed or allowed to disappear without proper investigation. If there is evidence that misconduct took place, those responsible must be held accountable and face appropriate consequences. Both the University of Bath and Bath Rugby Club have a responsibility to take allegations of this nature seriously, investigate them transparently, and prioritise the safety and wellbeing of students above protecting reputations.
The actions of the Bath Rugby Club members have violated the trust and safety of both the student body, Bath Spa students and the local community in Bath. These behaviours are not just isolated incidents but part of a bigger picture that allows such actions to be dismissed or swept under the rug. I find it disgusting that this university could stand by without enforcing strong repercussions for such actions; such as a thorough investigation of the club members or suspension of those involved
We demand accountability and consequences from the University of Bath. This is about setting a precedent for safety and accountability. This is important not only for current students but also for future generations who deserve to learn or have fun in an environment that is safe.
A critical first step involves an independent investigation into the club’s conduct and the university's response. Furthermore, implementing educational workshops and seminars on respect and ethics for student organisations and clubs will help to prevent future incidents. Lastly, the university must ensure support systems are in place for victims, ensuring they are heard and supported throughout their recovery.

Around 74% to 91% of reported victims identify as female, though surveys indicate high under-reporting among males and LGBTQ+ individuals. Roughly 59% of incidents happen in pubs, bars, and clubs, with peaks occurring heavily on weekends.
