WORLD, WATCH THE AFL: DEMAND JUSTICE, SAFETY AND ACCOUNTABILITY FOR WOMEN IN AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL

The AFL has serious questions to answer about how women are treated, protected and respected around the game.

When allegations of sexual violence or misconduct emerge, the focus must be on survivors, proper investigations, accountability and making sure powerful clubs or players are never treated as being above scrutiny.

But banning every man from playing AFL simply because he is male would not be fair or justified. The answer is stronger standards across the entire competition: independent investigations, tougher consequences where wrongdoing is proven, better education about consent and respect, stronger protections for women, and genuine opportunities for women’s football to grow.

Our beloved game should be a place where women feel safe, respected and equal — on the field, in the workplace, in the stands and everywhere around the sport.

The AFL should prove through its actions that protecting women matters more than protecting reputations.
