Hold Savannah Police Accountable for Detaining Peaceful Protesters in Medical Masks
The Issue
A peaceful protester in Savannah was detained just for wearing a medical mask. The video is hard to watch. She wasn’t being disruptive. She wasn’t breaking the law. She was simply standing up for her beliefs while protecting her health—and Savannah police put her in handcuffs for it.
The only justification? A Georgia law that’s supposed to stop people from hiding their identity. But she was wearing a standard surgical mask, the same kind millions of people still use to protect themselves from pollen, illness, or immune risk. This wasn’t about safety. This was about intimidation.
She was later released, but the damage is done. The message this sends to the community is chilling: that police will find any reason to arrest you if they don’t like your message. That peaceful protest is a risk if you’re wearing even a medical mask.
That’s why we’re calling on Mayor Van Johnson and the Savannah City Council to take action. We need a public explanation, accountability for the officers involved, and a clear policy that protects the rights of people who choose to wear masks for health reasons—especially at protests.
If Savannah is truly a place that values free expression and public health, then this can’t happen again. Stand with us and demand real accountability from those in power.
