The Issue

We are requesting urgent attention to a major problem affecting everyday families: rogue tradesmen who are undeterred by the consequences of their unethical practices. My family has personally experienced this distressing situation, which has not only left us financially strained but has also severely impacted our mental health.

We engaged a plumber for a much-needed home improvement project, entrusted him with a significant deposit of £1850 to acquire necessary materials, and were left high and dry when he abruptly abandoned the job. After challenging him about his substandard workmanship, particularly involving our bathroom, he refused to communicate further, leaving us without hot water and essential sanitary conditions including a functional toilet and shower.

More distressingly, upon issuing a County Court Judgement (CCJ) against him, we learned that this individual has already accrued five other CCJs against both him and his company. This indicates a troubling pattern of exploiting unsuspecting clients, yet our attempts at justice have been repeatedly thwarted; our court claims have been halted after three unsuccessful bailiff interventions. Meanwhile, we—and potentially many others—are left both out-of-pocket and deeply mistrustful of future interactions with tradesmen.

We demand stricter enforcement and tighter regulations to prevent unscrupulous tradesmen from continually defrauding honest, hardworking citizens. Legislative and judicial systems should introduce more accessible, efficient remediations for affected individuals. Possible solutions include:

1. Establishing a centralized database where customers can report questionable tradesmen, with verified complaints accessible to the public.
2. Mandating financial bonds or insurance for tradesmen, ensuring clients can reclaim their funds should a job be abandoned unreasonably.
3. Streamlining the process and requirements for enforcing CCJs and debt recovery, particularly after failed bailiff attempts.

These steps can serve to protect families from emotional and financial strain and restore confidence in tradespeople who adhere to their contracts with integrity.

We urge the relevant authorities and lawmakers to take immediate action against repeat offenders, ensuring tradesmen are held accountable, and safeguarding consumer rights. Please join me in seeking justice and a more reliable way to prevent and resolve these unfair situations. Sign this petition to demand change and protect others from falling victim to similar deceit.
