Hold Road Contractors Accountable — Enforce Penalties for Poor Road Quality in India

The Issue

Every year, crores of taxpayers’ money is spent on constructing roads — and yet, many roads in India start breaking down within a few months. Potholes, cracks, and uneven surfaces have become the norm, not the exception. These aren’t just minor inconveniences — they cause accidents, increase fuel and vehicle maintenance costs, and make daily life miserable for millions of citizens.

This poor quality is often due to contractors mixing substandard materials and cutting corners with little to no consequences. It’s time to change that.

We demand that the Government of India, especially the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and local road development bodies, implement a strict accountability and penalty system for all road contractors.

👉 Proposed Road Quality Accountability Model:
Roads must last a minimum of 3 years without major damage.
If a road deteriorates:

Within 1 year → Contractor pays a 200% fine of the contract value.
Within 2 years → Contractor pays a 100% fine.
Within 3 years → Contractor pays a 50% fine.
If the road lasts beyond 3 years, the contractor can be eligible for a quality bonus.
This penalty system will force contractors to use better materials and construction practices. It will improve the quality of roads, reduce the burden on citizens, and ensure responsible use of public funds.

Let’s put an end to this cycle of corruption, carelessness, and suffering. Sign this petition to demand real accountability from road contractors and authorities!
