The Issue

In 2019, life on the picturesque south shore of Loch Awe abruptly changed when forestry activities contaminated our local water supply, leaving it undrinkable. My family, along with the rest of our small village, suddenly faced an everyday reality where clean and safe drinking water was no longer available. This is not just a temporary inconvenience; it is a persistent health hazard and a violation of our basic human rights.

Despite the clear responsibility of those behind the forestry operations, we are yet to see any meaningful action or remedy. It's been almost eight years, and our village, including my young children, must still endure the consequences of contaminated water. Meanwhile, proposals for further work on new electricity lines in the forestry area risk exacerbating the situation by potentially introducing new environmental hazards.

It is imperative that SEPA, Scottish Water, and SSE step up to address the historic wrongs and ensure accountability moving forward. These organisations must work collaboratively not only to rectify the contamination but also to prevent similar issues from arising with future projects. Permanent, sustainable solutions must be designed and executed promptly, ensuring safe drinking water for us and for generations to come.

The Scottish authorities and responsible parties must engage with our community, assessing the state of our water and implementing necessary infrastructure improvements to guarantee its purity. Environmental oversight and regular monitoring need to be prioritized and strengthened to ensure there can never be negligence of this scale again. Further projects should only proceed with strict environmental guarantees and community involvement.

We cannot stand by and allow history to repeat itself. I implore you to sign this petition. Together, let's urge SEPA, Scottish Water, and SSE to acknowledge their accountability and take responsibility for securing a safe and sustainable water supply for Lochaweside. Stand with us in demanding immediate and decisive action—before it's too late.
