The Issue

Animal research is an archaic practice that belongs in the past. It is deeply distressing to know that dogs and cats are still being used in research experiments across Ontario. Premier Doug Ford has promised to end the use of these animals in research, but we must keep the pressure on until it is fully realized. This must change, and it must include private laboratories such as Nucro Technics, Nutrilab, Kingfisher International, and Transpharmation, all of which use cats, dogs, or both.

Ontario prides itself as a leader in innovation and technology, yet we continue barbaric practices that are unsuited to a society that values ethics and compassion. Animal testing is not only cruel but also outdated and often ineffective. Many studies have demonstrated that animals do not reliably predict human responses, rendering much of the research unnecessary. Alternatives exist, such as in vitro methods, computer modeling, and the use of human cell cultures, all of which minimize or eliminate suffering.

According to the Canadian Council on Animal Care, hundreds of dogs and cats are subjected to research annually. These animals endure significant physical and psychological stress. It is time to protect those who cannot protect themselves and retire these outdated methodologies for more humane scientific approaches. We have the opportunity to lead by example and embrace cruelty-free research.

Premier Ford must stay true to his word and extend the ban on the use of dogs and cats in research to all private facilities. This would position Ontario as a progressive and humane leader on the global stage, encouraging others to rethink their stance on animal testing. It is vital to hold him accountable and ensure these changes come into effect without further delay.

Sign this petition to urge Premier Doug Ford to fulfil his promise and abolish the use of dogs and cats in research across all sectors in Ontario, Canada. Together, we can push for a society that respects and protects the welfare of all its inhabitants, human and animal alike.
