Hold Polluters Accountable: Create a Maryland Climate Change Superfund Act!

The Issue

UPDATE: The "Responding to Emergency Needs from Extreme Weather (RENEW) Act" has been proposed to the Maryland Legislature! Click here for more information and to send your legislators an email expression your support!

Maryland’s taxpayers shouldn’t bear the financial burden for the corporate destruction of our climate. The effects of climate change are already devastating our state—rising sea levels are flooding our coastal areas, our summers are bringing more extreme heatwaves, and record-breaking storms are becoming commonplace. These disasters come with a massive price tag, costing billions in infrastructure repairs, disaster relief, lost livelihoods, and rising insurance premiums.

Fossil fuel companies, whose pollution has significantly contributed to these problems, must be held accountable. We urge you to introduce and support legislation similar to New York’s recently passed Climate Change Superfund Act, which requires fossil fuel companies to pay for the damage they have caused.

By signing this petition, we call for the following:

  • Hold Polluters Accountable: Require companies with a history of significant greenhouse gas emissions to contribute to climate adaptation costs, protecting taxpayers from bearing the financial burden of corporate negligence.
  • Invest in Maryland’s Future: Create a Climate Adaptation Fund, which will be funded by fossil fuel giants and used for projects in climate adaptation, renewable energy, and energy efficiency.
  • Fair Pay and Domestic Material Sourcing: Boost Maryland’s economy through climate resilience projects that create good jobs for local workers using American-made materials.

We believe that fossil fuel corporations should finance solutions to undo the damage they’ve caused to our state and communities. Marylanders of today and tomorrow deserve a clean, sustainable future.

We, the undersigned residents of Maryland, call upon Maryland's Congress to introduce and pass a Maryland Climate Change Superfund Act.
