Hold officers accountable for wrong-door raid in Toledo
The Issue
My life has been turned upside down because of a terrible mistake by local law enforcement that led to the wrongful killing of my beloved service dog, Soldier. This tragic event began when officers from the Toledo Police Department executed a raid on the wrong residence. As an innocent tenant, I had no connection to any criminal activities, yet I have been unjustly punished for an error that took away my loyal companion and cherished family member. Soldier was more than just a service dog; he was my trusted friend who helped me navigate daily challenges and provided unwavering comfort and support.
The emotional toll of losing Soldier is unimaginable, but what makes it even harder to bear is the lack of accountability and justice for this senseless act. This is not just a personal tragedy; it is a matter of public concern. Law enforcement agencies are entrusted to protect and serve, yet this incident reflects a severe breach of that trust. Such mistakes are not merely statistical aberrations—they come with real consequences for individuals who have committed no crime. A report by the New York Times reveals that wrong-door raids occur with alarming frequency, causing numerous innocent lives to be impacted every year. This is exactly what happened in my case. The Toledo Police SWAT team had prior intelligence - including a physical layout map drawn by the suspects live in girl friend- explicitly warning them that innocent tenants lived downstairs. Neighbors outside also verbally warned Officers before the breached. Yet, they willfully ignored this information. Since the raid, the Toledo Police Report Bureau had completely refused to amend their files ( CAD # TOP2693633 / RB# 021444-26 ) to hide the mistake. Furthermore, local animal control records falsely claimed Soldiers remains were " unclaimed and disposed of" directly contradicting my official certification transaction receipt from caring Cremations Services showing I reclaimed and paid for his cremation.
Toledo's City Council and Police Department must institute reforms to prevent wrongful raids and ensure that any officers involved in such mistakes are held accountable. This includes implementing comprehensive training programs focused on accuracy, situational awareness, and restraint, as well as establishing a transparent oversight committee to review such incidents and recommend disciplinary action where necessary. Only through these measures can we prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
My hope is for a world where no other innocent person has to experience the pain and suffering I have endured. By signing this petition, you are standing with me for justice for Soldier and advocating for necessary changes in how law enforcement operations are conducted. Please sign to demand accountability and reform in the Toledo Police Department. Help us ensure that no more lives are torn apart by preventable police errors.
