This petition stems from a personal and troubling concern regarding the treatment of animals under the guardianship of Animal Control Officers in New Jersey. Disturbingly, these allegations are not the first of their kind against Animal Control Officer Edmund Shimp. Previously, Shimp faced charges for animal cruelty which, regrettably, were dismissed or downgraded. Now, he is again under scrutiny for alleged maltreatment.

Our legal system tasks these officers with the critical responsibility of safeguarding the wellbeing of animals. According to New Jersey law, Animal Control Officers must take custody of animals in need of protection. They are responsible for ensuring these animals receive humane treatment and necessary veterinary care.

However, recent allegations captured on body cam footage indicate a grave violation of this duty. An animal named Poet allegedly suffered abuse at the hands of Officer Shimp. The evidence suggests Poet was dragged, tethered, and left gasping for breath—actions that stand in stark contrast to the officer's duty to protect and care for these creatures.

This petition calls for accountability and justice. We cannot allow these charges to once again be downgraded or dismissed. It is unacceptable for an individual with a history of such allegations to remain in a position of power over defenseless animals.

Animal welfare is not a subject to be taken lightly, and those who violate this trust must face the full extent of the law. Harper Lee once wisely noted, "The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience." Let us not allow our communal conscience to be sullied by inaction.

We implore the relevant authorities to hold Edmund Shimp accountable to ensure that no animal suffers under his watch again. We owe it to Poet and countless other animals who rely on us for protection and care. Let us stand together against such cruelty—justice must prevail.
