The Issue

In North Vernon, Indiana, a shocking situation has come to light involving a 15-year-old named Landon Dotty, who has been charged with sexual assault against a seven-year-old non-verbal autistic child. This horrifying incident allegedly occurred 14 times on a school bus designed for special needs children, while adults who were supposed to ensure safety did nothing. Imagine the trust we place in our schools and their staff, only to find out that they completely failed to protect our vulnerable children.

The school district’s decision to place Landon on a special needs bus, following his destruction of a seat on his previous bus, was reckless and nonsensical. Instead of addressing behavioral issues appropriately, this decision led to traumatic consequences for an innocent child. This negligence is further compounded by the fact that both the bus driver and the monitor failed to take action, even though the abuse happened repeatedly under their watch.

It is unacceptable that the children noticed what the adults failed to, highlighting a grave lapse in responsibility. Why did this go unnoticed for so long? Where was the vigilance expected from trained professionals? The school district must be held accountable, not just the individual charged, but those who allowed this to happen repeatedly.

We must demand systemic change to ensure the safety of all children. This starts with holding North Vernon Schools accountable and implementing new policies to ensure that something like this can never happen again. The safety of our children should never be compromised, and it’s time for the school to take responsibility and change its protocols to prevent any further neglect.

Join me in urging our local officials to take immediate action. Accountability and safety reforms in North Vernon Schools must be our priority. Please sign this petition to demand justice and ensure our children are protected.
