HARD TO GET A PARK

The issue

The recent opening of the Derrimut Gym has had a significant negative impact on our businesses.

In particular the matters that are impacting our businesses are:

  • Staff members and customers are unable to obtain parking spaces
  • Gym patrons parking in privately owned car-parking spaces
Traffic hazards for delivery drivers navigating streets and service road
  • Gym patrons parking in disabled parking zones
Traffic hazards and near misses from dangerous driving and excessive speed from gym patrons
  • Emergency vehicles unable to access the Childcare Center, putting children at risk
  • Fire risk as fire trucks are unable to gain access to service lanes and streets
  • Difficulty for council and contracted rubbish removal trucks accessing skips and rubbish bins
  • Concerns for staff and customer safety (particularly female) with incidents that have escalated to Police involvement
Abusive, threatening and dangerous behaviour from gym patrons
  • Increased litter within a 3 block radius
  • Noise pollution (Childcare Centre directly impacted)

This situation is out of hand and we ask for your support for both local businesses and residents.  We understand Monash Council has received many complaints and are looking into the situation, however, we are unable to obtain a direct contact within the Council and seek your assistance urgently in getting this matter resolved.

As business owners we have gone to great lengths to protect our businesses including:

  • Hiring security guards to protect clients, staff and parking spaces
  • Erecting signage asking gym patrons to be respectful when parking
  • Installation of speed humps and signage
  • Consideration of hiring tow companies and clamping cars that are parking on private property
  • Consideration of installing boom gates and bollards

We are concerned Council will make further decisions affecting our businesses without consultation and therefore we urgently seek your support.

Thanks,

Sally
