Hold Mississippi Judge Accountable for Denying Trans Teen’s Legal Name Change

The Issue

In the United States, changing your name is a basic legal right. But in Mississippi, a judge just denied that right to a transgender teen—with no legal basis.

The 16-year-old, who is transitioning, filed to change his name to better reflect his gender identity. His parents fully supported the request. But Hinds County Judge Tametrice Hodges denied the petition, citing “lack of maturity.” On April 17, the Mississippi Supreme Court upheld her decision in an 8–1 vote.

This ruling sets a dangerous precedent. Every American—including trans youth—has the right to live with a name that reflects who they are. When a judge uses personal bias to override that right, it’s not just cruel—it’s a violation of legal norms.

We’re calling on the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance to investigate Judge Hodges’ conduct. And we urge lawmakers to change the law so no judge can deny a minor’s name change when their parents consent.

No judge should deny anyone their identity. Sign to demand justice.
