The Issue

It was a typical Friday night under the lights—a high school football game between Lake Zurich and Stevenson. As an alum and lifelong supporter of Stevenson High School, I was in the stands, filled with pride and excitement, ready to cheer on the home team. However, that excitement quickly turned sour when, in an unbelievable display of power, the Lake Zurich principal decided to eject an entire section of Stevenson students from the stands. Their crime? Simply cheering passionately for their team, exercising their right to free speech.

This action wasn't just an overreach; it was a violation of fundamental principles we teach our children—regarding the importance of free speech and supporting one another. It was a chilling moment that disrupted the spirit of unity and enthusiasm that high school sports are meant to promote. The students who were removed were not causing harm or posing any threat; they were merely expressing their joy and support. This abrupt ejection left many of us outraged and concerned about the precedent it sets.

Public schools are supposed to be bastions of free expression and forums where students can engage in civil discourse. Shutting down voices, especially during a joyous and competitive environment, sends the wrong message to our youth about handling dissent and disagreement.

We are calling on the Lake Zurich administration to take serious steps to rectify this situation. Firstly, we demand a public apology from the principal for this overreach of authority and a clear outline of how situations like this will be handled more appropriately in the future. Specific measures and guidelines should be developed—and shared publicly—to ensure the rights and freedoms of students are respected and protected.

Furthermore, we urge both Lake Zurich and Stevenson school boards to collaborate on improving policies regarding student interaction and fan support at athletic events. There should be a balanced approach that fosters both support and spirit, without impinging on basic rights.

The removal of these students not only affected their experience but also sent a ripple across the community. We owe it to them, to both Lake Zurich and Stevenson, and most importantly, to future generations. Let's make sure our schools are places where expressing oneself is celebrated and not punished.

Sign this petition to demand accountability and to stand up for free speech in our schools. Together, we can ensure a better, more inclusive environment for all students.
