If you would like to participate, I need your response by Sunday, August 30th, as I cannot formally file a group complaint without consent from each person. Furthermore, participation requires explaining your personal experiences.

I’m starting this petition not only to share my story but to rally others who were at JVA—whether in Surrey, Langley, or its U.S. locations—to speak up, share testimonies, and join a group complaint or public call for accountability.

My Experience at JVA Included:
⤷18-hour "exit interrogation" when I said I wanted to leave. Locked in a room, fed a plate of burnt tater tots, and pressured to stay.
⤷Punishments for “rule violations”, including forced silence for weeks and wearing shirts listing the alleged infractions.
⤷Restricted communication with family, including directly monitored or delayed calls, often requiring a locked room with a “guardian” physically present.
⤷Extreme labor, including scrubbing houses with toothbrushes in freezing temperatures and roof-thatching on remote islands. One patient was even gored by a water buffalo during farm labor.
⤷Religious bias and coercion, favoring Mormon participants while restricting the practice of my faith at the time.
⤷Minimal media access, only a short pre-approved film each week, with music, phones, and personal devices forbidden for extended periods.
⤷Verbal and emotional abuse, including being called a “charlatan,” extreme punishments, and confiscation of personal items such as family photos and a mouthguard that were never returned.
⤷Toxic power dynamics, including harsh chastisement by former addicts in leadership roles and a pervasive culture of fear and shame.
⤷Severe trauma, including PTSD and panic attacks years after leaving. My departure involved walking five miles to a library with no ID or phone, begging a stranger to let me call my parents, then traveling home to Virginia while breaking down in panic.
⤷I’ve since discovered others with similar experiences—many too scared or ashamed to speak out. With JVA reportedly facing government-ordered closure, I believe it’s time to raise our voices.

I am calling for:
⤷Public acknowledgment from JVA leadership about the harm caused
⤷Refunds of mandatory deposits for anyone who left early due to mistreatment
⤷An independent investigation into the Academy's practices
⤷Witnesses and survivors willing to participate in a group human rights complaint in British Columbia
⤷Support for a possible criminal investigation into actions including forced confinement
If you or someone you know was at JVA—even if we weren’t there at the same time—please come forward.

⤷This is not about revenge—it’s about truth, healing, and preventing future abuse.

Why it took so long to report:
⤷Years of emotional damage after surviving this institution’s cult-like abuse, including depression, homelessness, isolation, gaslighting, appeasing abusers to survive, lack of compassion from others, disbelief, and stigma for disability or religious discrimination.

Please sign and share this petition. Reach out if you are a survivor of abuse from this “academy.”
