Dear supporters,
We want to share some crucial context that helps explain why so many disturbing reports are emerging from former clients of the John Volken Academy (JVA). It is becoming clear that this so-called “rehab” program is not a place of healing, but rather a modern-day reincarnation of Synanon-style coercion and abuse — the very blueprint for the troubled teen industry that has destroyed countless lives.
Its tactics spawned the troubled teen industry — a network of programs using peer shaming, loss of autonomy, and harsh labor disguised as therapy.
Despite Synanon’s collapse decades ago, many programs like JVA continue to recycle these abusive methods under the guise of “life skills” and “discipline.”
🧠 The Synanon Blueprint
Many of you have asked: How did a place like JVA operate for so long with such little oversight?
To understand that, we need to look at Synanon — a 1950s drug rehab program turned cult that became the blueprint for what’s now known as the Troubled Teen Industry.
Synanon started with good intentions but quickly devolved into a system of coercive control:
➤Public humiliation and verbal attacks disguised as “therapy”
➤Forced unpaid labor for the program’s financial gain
➤Loss of personal freedom: no outside contact, isolated punishments, and psychological pressure to conform
➤No professional counselors — only peer-led “treatment”
➤Though Synanon was ultimately shut down, its tactics lived on, quietly shaping hundreds of “rehab” and “behavioral modification” programs across North America — many of which are now facing lawsuits or government crackdowns.
⚠️ How This Relates to the John Volken Academy
Former JVA residents and government inspections describe eerily similar practices:
➤Unpaid, 10–18 hour workdays in for-profit businesses run by the Academy
➤Punitive isolation, speaking bans, and "benching" for minor infractions
➤Peer-run group shaming sessions without licensed counselors
➤Confiscated IDs, restrictions on leaving, and spiritual manipulation
➤Limited professional mental health support or medical staff (off campus visit, upon entry, one time)
➤These are not just harsh rules or “tough love”—they’re tactics from a discredited, dangerous system that has harmed thousands over decades.
The fact that a modern-day program in British Columbia could mirror these same abusive structures is not a coincidence. It’s part of a larger pattern of unregulated “treatment” programs hiding behind good intentions and religious messaging.
📣 The Public Speaks Out
We encourage everyone to read this Reddit thread where former JVA clients and staff describe their firsthand experiences:
👉 Reddit: Former Volken Academy Clients Describe Conditions
➤It is filled with detailed and often heartbreaking stories of people who entered JVA seeking help — only to encounter exploitation, fear, and psychological trauma. Former clients, staff, and family members share heartbreaking, shocking testimonies in hidden corners all over the internet.
➤Unpaid 10–18 hour workdays under constant pressure to meet profit quotas for John Volken’s businesses.
➤One former client revealed:
“John would shout at students if the businesses were not reaching profit goals... it was exhausting and humiliating.”
➤Punitive isolation measures such as “benching” (being forced to sit silently for hours), speaking bans, and “holdbacks” that kept clients confined and powerless.
➤Confiscation of IDs and restricted freedom of movement, with some clients describing feeling more controlled than inmates,
“I would’ve rather gone to jail than stay there.”
➤Lack of professional medical or psychological support, replaced instead by peer-led “therapy” sessions where clients were forced to confront and shame each other in emotionally damaging ways.
➤One former staff member exposed sexual and psychological abuse by staff, plus unsafe working conditions resulting in injuries like fractured fingers and even a buffalo goring incident.
➤Multiple commenters highlight how the environment was less about recovery and more about profit-driven labor disguised as therapy.
Why This Matters
This thread confirms what government inspections and advocacy groups have found: JVA operates on the same harmful, cult-like principles as Synanon, putting vulnerable youth at risk under the pretense of rehabilitation.
The industry built on these principles has left a long trail of trauma, lawsuits, and broken families — yet places like JVA continue unchecked.
Take Action
We urge everyone to:
Share this update widely. The more people who understand the Synanon roots of JVA’s practices, the stronger our collective call for reform.
Support legislation requiring strict oversight and licensing of all residential treatment programs.
One user sums it up powerfully:
“This ‘academy’ uses the same tactics as Synanon, which spawned the troubled teen industry. Just in case people don’t know where their practices come from.”
➤We believe the public has a right to know the full truth about what happened inside the John Volken Academy and why it matters.
➤Thank you for standing with us in demanding accountability, transparency, and real reform. Keep sharing. Keep speaking out. Change is coming. Thank you for standing with us to expose this harmful legacy and demand safe, ethical care for those struggling with addiction and behavioral issues.
The Lasting Psychological Impact
It’s important to remember that traumatic environments cause real, lasting harm — no matter how long someone stayed. To quote a survivor of John Volken Academy:
“For the Stanford Prison Experiment, all it took was a week for the damaging lasting psychological effects, so whether you were here 5 days, two weeks, 3 and a half weeks or three years, the impact remains.”
This underscores why every voice in the thread matters and why reform is urgent. For those who experienced it firsthand and now struggle with cognitive rumination or chronic PTSD, events from ten years ago can feel as vivid as if they happened yesterday—especially when triggered or overwhelmed by the challenges of today’s world.
Firsthand Experiences
➤One graduate turned whistleblower shared a harrowing account:
“I literally went to the funeral of a friend who died from an overdose ON SITE at the Academy just last year. They detailed intense workdays—often 10–18 hours—unpaid, and mandated “profit quotas” managed by John himself.
“we would often have 10 – 12 hour days, sometimes … 16 to 18 hours in a day. It was grueling.” reddit.com
“John … would shout at students if these businesses were not reaching profit quotas.”
They emphasized that “voluntary” entry was compromised by confiscated IDs and economic vulnerability.
Control & Punishments
➤Multiple sources describe a pseudo-cult environment:
Speaking bans, enforced “bench” isolation, and “holdback” penalties were used for rule.
One former staff member (on r/alcoholism) recounted:
“indefinites … work from sun up to sun down with only a half hour break,” including psychological and sexual abuse of clients by staff.
➤Ministry reports noted bans on interacting with the opposite sex, no medical staff onsite, and opened mail.
Safety, Injuries, & Lack of Oversight: Allegations from government inspections include:
No WorkSafe BC coverage for injuries
➤Work-related accidents: stitched wounds, fractured fingers, hip injuries, and a buffalo goring incident
➤Peer-led "therapy" only, with no scheduled psychosocial support; conflict management happened in group complaint sessions
➤Residents often too exhausted or restricted to attend external counseling
➤Negative accounts dominate, citing coercion, exploitation, and emotional neglect.
Official Response & Closure
➤The B.C. Ministry of Health ordered the facility to cease operations by March 8, 2025, after inspectors substantiated numerous
➤JVA dropped its appeal in March 2025 but plans to continue its “work-life skills” farm program; Surrey recovery housing was sold
Key Takeaways
➤Coercive measures: prolonged unpaid work (10-18h/day), punitive rules like speaking bans and bench isolation.
➤Retaliatory Peer community: clients supported each other's recovery in confrontational ways that were not safe or advised.
➤Safety risks: injuries without coverage, running farm operations without professional oversight.
➤Actual Professional Therapy gaps: minimal professional counseling, mostly peer-led conflict sessions.
➤Loss of freedom: IDs withheld, leave restricted—to the point some preferred prison.
Timeline
1. JVA Shuts Down and Drops Its Appeal
➤In March 2025, the provincial Ministry of Health revoked JVA’s registration under the Community Care and Assisted Living Act, ordering its closure as of March 8, 2025.
➤JVA initially appealed that order, with a nine‑day hearing slated to begin May 5, but in mid‑March, the Academy dropped that appeal
➤Founder John Volken held a press conference on March 24, stating the closure was a “hiccup” and reaffirmed his commitment to the mission coastmountainnews.com.
2. Allegations from Former Residents: Work, Punishments & Injuries:
➤Multiple former clients recounted strenuous physical work immediately after arrival, including meat‐slicer operation and dairy/farm duties, even during detox
Alleged punishments included:
➤“The bench”—isolated sitting,
➤“Speaking bans” lasting days or weeks,
➤Group “horseshoe” confrontations.
➤These methods were still reportedly used despite a 2023
➤Ministry findings highlighted up to 56‑hour workweeks, often unpaid, with clients warned their program completion and certificate depended on compliance .
➤Reports included injuries: cuts needing stitches, crushed fingers, broken hips after falling off ladders, and a resident gored by a water buffalo—none insured under WorkSafe.
3. Volken Responds & Sells Surrey Site, Farm Remains
➤At a press event on March 25, John Volken confirmed he sold the Surrey recovery‑centre property but assured operations would continue at the Langley farm—albeit without recovery
➤He strongly criticized the Ministry’s officials—naming them “nasty” and “evil”—and disputed allegations of forced extra work, claiming clients could leave freely coastmountainnews.com.
➤A tragic note from the event: a former resident, denied re-entry following the shutdown, later overdosed and died on March 9, 2025; Volken’s team contended that such an overdose had never occurred on-site before .
4. Chronology & Regulatory Actions
➤A Jan 2, 2025 decision warned the facility could close as soon as March 7
➤A July 11, 2024, ordering letter from Ross Hayward detailed the complaints and led to the registration
➤Despite the 2023 ban on “bench,” “horseshoe,” and “speaking bans,” the Ministry found continued use of these methods into 2024
➢July 11, 2024
Ministry issues letter citing abuses.
➢Jan 2, 2025
Appeal board sets shutdown deadline around March 7
➢Mar 8, 2025
JVA officially ceases operations
➢Mid-Mar 2025
Appeal is dropped
➢Mar 24–25, 2025
Press conference; Surrey site sold; farm continues operating
⤷The closure stemmed from persistent regulatory violations, including excessive unpaid labor, harsh punitive practices, and safety incidents—all despite prior orders to cease such behaviors.
⤷Volken refutes the allegations but confirms the Surrey centre has closed, while the Langley farm continues operations without any structured recovery program.
⤷The downfall of the Surrey facility seems definitive; logging any further appeals or potential reopening would involve new regulatory approval.
Perspectives:
⤷The Reddit discussion reveals a deeply divided picture:
➤Supporters see tough love and structured labor as effective.
➤Critics and official investigations point to psychological abuse, unsafe conditions, and exploitative labor practices.
➤While one positive testimonial from Seattle exists, the overwhelming evidence—including government findings and multiple firsthand accounts—describe a program that often prioritized business profits over proper recovery care.

🔂 To reiterate previous connection of Synanon...
What Was Synanon?
➤Synanon was originally founded in 1958 by Charles Dederich as a drug rehabilitation program in California. It soon morphed into:
➤A cult-like commune
Using intense confrontational tactics
➤With forced labor, public shaming, and rigid control over members’ lives
Key “therapeutic” methods used by Synanon:
➤"The Game" – Group sessions where members publicly humiliated and psychologically attacked each other under the guise of self-help.
➤Isolation & Punishment – Members who broke rules were punished with hard labor or ostracism.
➤Loss of Autonomy – Members surrendered their decision-making: no leaving without permission, strict curfews, and arranged marriages or forced abortions were documented.
➤No Professional Oversight – It was peer-run, with little to no licensed therapy or medical input.
➤Synanon eventually collapsed due to scandals, criminal activity, and lawsuits, but…other facilities "copied" some of it tactics.
Legacy: The Troubled Teen Industry
➤Many "therapeutic boarding schools," behavior modification programs, and boot camps for at-risk youth copied Synanon’s structure, giving rise to the Troubled Teen Industry (TTI):
➤These programs often used “tough love,” forced labor, humiliation, and peer shaming as discipline.
➤Many have been accused of abuse, neglect, and cult-like control.
Examples include:
➤Élan School (shut down)
➤WWASP programs (many also shut down or rebranded)
🔁 How It Relates to John Volken Academy
From the Reddit thread and government reports, people are pointing to similar tactics between Synanon and JVA:
Synanon Practice
Alleged JVA Parallel
➤Group humiliation ("The Game")
➤Peer-led “conflict resolution” sessions
➤Unpaid labor
➤Long shifts (10–18 hrs/day) with no pay
➤Isolation as punishment
➤"Bench" and "holdback" restrictions
➤Withholding freedom
➤Confiscated IDs, restricted movement
➤Lack of trained therapists
➤No consistent mental health professionals
➤Cult-like leader figure
➤John Volken described as controlling and profit-driven
Bottom Line
The comment is saying: “Don’t be fooled by the nice website or inspirational messaging—this is a recycled version of a discredited model." The same coercive, non-clinical methods that were discredited decades ago with Synanon and the TTI are being seen in the operations of JVA, according to former clients and regulators.
If you're exploring addiction recovery or youth intervention programs, it's a strong warning to look for licensed, evidence-based treatment models — not those rooted in Synanon-style ideology. Surprisingly, it's exceedingly rare to find qualified professionals when seeking safe healthcare these days.
Together, we can stop Synanon-style abuses from continuing in the 21st century.
With gratitude,
Clelia Jane Sheppard

P.S.
American Addiction Centers implemented a peer-led "town hall" style morning routine. While this wasn’t a core component of the recovery process, it offered a revealing glimpse into how quickly structure can break down when meetings are run by individuals still struggling with stability. The format often devolved into disputes over seating arrangements, titles, and other trivial power struggles—conflicts rooted more in dominance and unprocessed aggression than in any meaningful leadership. The atmosphere frequently became chaotic, marked by constant interruptions and a performative sense of authority within what was ultimately a fragile and artificial environment. This dynamic highlighted the limitations of such a model, and how quickly a cult-like atmosphere can emerge—often with the most fractured and troubled individuals gravitating toward leadership roles.
There’s currently a petition calling for accountability: Please sign “Investigate American Addiction Centers.”
