I am a student at Maynard Jackson High School and have personally witnessed unacceptable behavior from Jefferson High School during our recent football game. As a black student, I face racism and injustice daily, but experiencing such overtly racist actions from another school's students was shocking and deeply unsettling.

During the game, students from Jefferson High School were reported using racial slurs, including the "hard R," which is completely unacceptable in any setting. They not only disrespected the dignity of my fellow students but also spat on individuals and even food, showing a total lack of decency and respect.

Further compounding the issue, Jefferson High School's officials prohibited our school bus from entering their campus, forcing us to risk our safety by crossing a busy street. In addition, students waved the Confederate flag—a symbol of racism and hate—and disturbingly referenced sundown towns, echoing a history of racial segregation and violence that continues to haunt our communities.

School events should be a time of friendly competition and community building, not a platform for racism and division. The actions demonstrated by Jefferson High School students threaten the inclusivity and safety of all participants, not just those from Maynard Jackson High School, but from any institution that may encounter such behavior.

We demand that Jefferson High School be held accountable for these actions. This includes implementing mandatory diversity and sensitivity training for all students and staff, establishing clear penalties for racist behavior, and fostering an environment of inclusivity and respect.

The school administration must take immediate and decisive action to ensure that such behavior is addressed and prevented in the future. We owe it to our community to stand against hate and promote a culture that is accepting and respectful of all backgrounds.
