On July 4th 2024, around 1:47am in Hemet, California, Hemet Police Department officers were responsible for the senseless death of Jimmy Eugene Lopez, an unarmed man who was presumed to possess a firearm. The officers hastily made the fatal decision to fire over 100 rounds at Jimmy prior to confirming him to be in possession of a firearm. Upon making contact, Jimmy was not even standing, but laying on the ground, intoxicated and incapacitated at the time. JImmy was never aggressive or had he threatened anyone during his time out that night...Echoing the pain, anger, and confusion of many, this brutal and unnecessary act has devastated those who loved Jimmy. Jimmy was innocent and loved by so many in his community. His passing has left a void that cannot ever be filled, and has also raised grave concerns about the Hemet Police Department's use of excessive force. There is a disheartening need to question their decision-making capabilities and their discernment in life and death situations.

This petition is a demand for justice for Jimmy Eugene Lopez and for all those who have been unfairly victimized by police excessive use of force. We demand that the Hemet Police Department officers involved in this incident be brought before a criminal court and held accountable for their actions. We believe that this is a necessary step towards real justice and needed reform within their department.
