As a parent in Green Mountain, Lakewood, I am deeply concerned about the leadership at Foothills Elementary School. My daughter, a strong-willed and vibrant child, attends this school, and increasingly I worry about the environment she is exposed to. With a principal who is reportedly unkind to students and teachers alike, moving an admirable number of good staff to leave, the quality of our children's education and well-being is at stake.

The principal should be figure who fosters a nurturing and supportive environment, yet the current leadership is reportedly doing the opposite. We've heard multiple accounts of students feeling belittled and unable to express their personalities freely. Teachers who once brought energy and innovation to classrooms are opting to leave, citing poor working conditions and lack of support. The loss of these dedicated educators has significantly impacted the school’s atmosphere, making it a less inspiring and more stressful place for both students and faculty members.

Research has shown that a positive school environment, bolstered by supportive leadership, is crucial for fostering student success. A 2015 study from the American Educational Research Association found that school leadership is second only to classroom instruction in its impact on student learning. Are we really willing to compromise our children's education and mental well-being by allowing these conditions to persist?

Our goal is to ensure that all students at Foothills Elementary have the opportunity to learn in a supportive and positive environment. The school district needs to take decisive action by thoroughly investigating these claims and, if necessary, replacing the current principal with a leader who embodies understanding, compassion, and a commitment to the students and staff.
