Florida International University is home to one of the most diverse student bodies in the country. Students of every race, religion, background, and political belief walk the same halls, attend the same classes, and deserve the same sense of safety and respect.

Recent reporting revealed that student political leaders at FIU participated in a private group chat filled with racist slurs, antisemitic comments, degrading language toward women, and even explicit references to Nazi ideology and violence. These were not anonymous internet trolls. These were individuals holding leadership roles in recognized campus organizations.

FIU has stated that the matter is under review. That review must be thorough, transparent, and followed by meaningful action.

Open celebration of racism, antisemitism, and violent rhetoric crosses a clear line. When students in positions of leadership promote or tolerate this behavior, it undermines trust, damages the university’s reputation, and sends a chilling message to classmates who already face discrimination.

We are calling on FIU President Kenneth A. Jessell and the FIU Board of Trustees to complete an independent review of this incident, publicly clarify the findings, and enforce clear consequences consistent with university policy. FIU must also strengthen oversight standards for recognized student organizations to ensure leadership reflects the university’s commitment to equal dignity and safety for all.

Students should never have to wonder whether those representing them view them as less than human.

FIU can demonstrate that accountability and free expression can coexist — and that racism and threats of violence have no place in any campus community.
