Corruption has plagued Desha County for far too long, and it is time for our community to demand change and integrity from our law enforcement agencies. Mitch Grant’s recent DWI incident, and its subsequent cover-up by certain members of the Desha County Sheriff's Office, is a glaring example of the issues that undermine public trust in our legal system and tarnish the reputation of our community.

Mitch Grant was found unresponsive due to driving while intoxicated; however, several Desha County sheriff's deputies allegedly took part in a cover-up to protect him. Such actions not only violate the law but also betray the trust of the citizens they have sworn to protect and serve. This is more than just an isolated incident—it's a symptom of a larger problem of corruption and lack of accountability within our local law enforcement.

Accountability starts with transparency and holding those in power to the same laws as the people they serve. We insist that all deputies involved in this cover-up be thoroughly investigated and, if found complicit, appropriately reprimanded. This includes disciplinary actions that are consistent with any wrongdoing, as well as mandatory retraining on ethical enforcement of the law.

Beyond individual accountability, we urge for systemic reforms that ensure such breaches of justice do not occur in the future. This includes the implementation of body cameras for all officers, independent oversight committees to review incidents involving law enforcement, and ongoing ethics training to promote a culture of integrity and accountability within the department.

The people of Desha County deserve to live in a community where the law applies equally to everyone, and those tasked with enforcing it do so with honor and fairness.
