The Issue

As a responsible driver on the roads of the UK, I believe it’s high time we address a growing concern: the accountability of cyclists and motorcyclists regarding road safety. At present, car drivers shoulder the burden of road taxes, insurance, and numerous other responsibilities to ensure the safety and functionality of our roadways. Yet, we frequently find roads closed for cyclists and pedestrians, even though these groups do not contribute financially in the same manner car owners do.

Everyone who uses the road should adhere to the same standards and bear equal responsibility for road safety. However, the current legislation often places undue blame on drivers in accidents involving cyclists or motorcyclists, even when it's clear the driver's actions were not at fault. This is not only unfair, but it endangers all road users by allowing cyclists and motorcyclists to act with a sense of impunity.

Statistics show that a significant number of road accidents involve cyclists or motorcyclists. According to the Department for Transport, traffic accidents involving bicycles accounted for over 25,000 incidents in the UK in the last year alone, with motorcyclists comprising a disproportionate percentage of road fatalities. Many of these accidents could have been prevented if all road users were held to the same safety standards and accountability.

We need a solution that treats all road users equally under the law. This includes the introduction of licenses, mandatory insurance, and road safety education for cyclists and motorcyclists similar to what is required for car drivers. Such measures would not only align the responsibilities across all road users but also enhance overall road safety.

By implementing these changes, we could reduce the number of road accidents and create a safer, more equitable environment on our roads. It's time we close this gap and ensure everyone who benefits from the roads contributes their fair share to maintaining their safety and infrastructure.

We urge the UK government and local councils to take immediate action to enforce equal responsibility and accountability for all road users. A change in legislation will level the playing field, protect all road users, and make our roads safer for everyone.

Sign this petition to demand that cyclists and motorcyclists are subject to the same road safety requirements and responsibilities as car drivers. Together, we can push for fair treatment and accountability, ensuring everyone's safety on our roads.
