The Issue

On January 24th, 2023, a 2-year-old Husky named Enzo wandered off a mile from his home in Lodi after he accidentally got out of his family's yard. Enzo was a fluffy husky who was very sweet to children and neighbors. After a call was made to Animal Control Services to collect the lost dog, two Lodi police officers and one Animal Control officer arrived. Instead of comforting Enzo and following protocol to take lost dogs to the nearest shelter, the officers participated in the brutal murder of a sweet family pet. They tased Enzo, and they dragged him by the neck with a metal catch pole. Enzo's family and the entire animal-lover community are devastated! Enzo died from inexcusable violence and excessive use of force.

The below-signed petitioners are demanding the suspension and subsequent termination of the two officers involved. We are also demanding that based on California Penal Code [CPC] §597(a) – Animal Cruelty that felony charges be brought against both officers. Penal Code §597(a) makes it a crime to intentionally maim, mutilate, torture, wound, or kill a living animal. We are also seeking that they be charged with misuse of a non lethal weapon.

We need to send a message that no one is above the law when it comes to any living creature. This is not the first case of an unnecessary animal death by the hands of law enforcement, but we can take steps to ensure that Enzo’s death was not in vain.

Rest in Peace, Enzo!
