Hold Criminals Accountable: Say NO to Mental Health Diversion for Offenders in Vallejo
The Issue
In February 2023, while my husband, infant daughter, and I were sleeping in our home in Vallejo, four individuals broke in between 2 and 4 AM. One woman, a repeat offender with a long criminal history, entered just feet from our baby, stole both of our vehicles, and took nearly everything of value from our home, including our daughter’s stroller, toys, and car seat.
We were never even awakened by police, only notified at 5 AM by a call from an unmarked number telling us our garage was wide open and our cars were gone. One car was tracked and recovered by GPS in San Francisco hours later, where the suspect was arrested in possession of our wallets and my purse, while carrying a knife. The other three people involved were never caught.
She was released shortly after and has since reoffended, yet now we’re being told she may qualify for mental health diversion to avoid prison time.
Let us be clear: Mental health diversion is not an excuse for this level of harm and repeated criminal activity. This is a serious matter of public safety.
When we recovered our second vehicle on our own, police never processed it, even though it contained drug paraphernalia, vomit, human feces, and a cellphone. We cleaned it ourselves and handed the evidence over.
The trauma didn’t end there. That night, we couldn’t sleep. We booby-trapped our house out of fear the suspects would return, as police warned they might. Since then, we’ve spent over $4,000 on a security system and cameras. We no longer feel safe in our own home. We barley sleep. We don’t go outside. We fear retaliation.
We are speaking out not just for ourselves, but for every Vallejo resident who deserves better protection and justice.
We’re calling on the City of Vallejo, its elected officials, and the District Attorney’s Office to:
• Reject mental health diversion for repeat violent offenders
• Provide accountability for victims
• Reform how break-ins and home invasions are handled by police
• Make public safety a priority for Vallejo families
We were failed. But it’s not too late to fix it for us, for our children, and for our community.
