The actions of both these police officers is unacceptable. Whether this wild animal was rabid or not there is absolutely no excuse for two people who have the title to protect and serve to treat a living thing like this. Both police officers should have acted in a respectful and humane way to try and get this animal out of harms way where it couldn’t get hurt. Seeing as this event took place in a public parking lot the police obviously couldn’t use their firearms due to the safety of the public. Both these individuals should have come up with a different plan instead of torturing this animal by charging at it with their vehicles which eventually left this raccoon dead.

To whom it may concern:

On behalf of the public we are asking that both these officers be held responsible for their actions. These individuals should be charged with animal abuse due to their actions which were completely uncalled for. These individuals have a title to protect and serve and they did not. Instead they drove fear into an animal and eventually killed it. Whether these police officers think that this was the only “humane” way to take care of this situation WHICH THEY DID via their response on Facebook:

Coeymans Police Department has posted a statement on its Facebook page:

"On March 12 we received numerous calls about a rabid raccoon in Faith Plaza. The raccoon had attempted to get into the establishment at one point. Our officers did find the raccoon, but it was not in an area that was safe to discharge a firearm due to the proximity of pedestrians and residences. They dispatched the raccoon as quickly and humanely as possible."

They are in the wrong 100% and these actions will not be accepted PERIOD. As stated above these two individuals should be charged with animal abuse due to the outcome which was NOT HUMANE and resulted in them killing an innocent animal who was minding it’s own business.  If you think that this was the only humane way to take care of the situation you’re just as guilty as these two individuals.
