Hold Coconut Creek Police Accountable for Reckless Driving
The Issue
Have you ever been driving through Coconut Creek, Florida, simply minding your own business, when a police vehicle suddenly comes flying past you at a speed and in a manner that puts your safety at risk?
That happened to me.
I captured the incident on video, and what concerns me most is not simply that an officer drove recklessly—it is the apparent lack of accountability that allows this type of behavior to continue.
That night, the officer did not appear to follow a single basic rule of the road. The vehicle was being operated at a dangerous speed, came dangerously close to my vehicle, and was driven in a manner that I believe placed other people on the road at unnecessary risk.
And this does not feel like an isolated incident.
I have repeatedly observed Coconut Creek police vehicles being operated in ways that make me question whether officers believe the rules they enforce apply to them. I have also observed officers using their police vehicles and authority to move through the community in ways that appear unnecessary—for example, driving aggressively or at high speeds only to ultimately sit in parking lots without responding to an apparent emergency.
When this happens repeatedly without meaningful consequences, what message does that send?
It sends the message that officers know they can get away with it.
Officers are trained professionals. They know the traffic laws. They know the responsibilities that come with operating emergency vehicles. They know that their actions can affect the safety of everyone around them.
So when the same types of behavior continue, residents have every reason to ask: Who is holding them accountable?
This petition is not about preventing officers from responding to legitimate emergencies. It is not about criticizing every officer or questioning the difficult work law enforcement performs. It is about something much simpler:
The people sworn to enforce the law should also be held accountable when their own conduct creates unnecessary risks for the public.
Residents should not have to record police officers on their phones simply to have unsafe behavior taken seriously. And officers should not have to wait until someone is seriously injured before their driving practices are examined.
I have also encountered officers who are aware that residents are documenting their conduct through social media. That makes meaningful oversight even more important. If officers know their behavior is being observed and continue engaging in conduct that puts the public at risk, the issue is no longer simply whether they know better—it is whether they believe anyone will hold them responsible.
We are calling for:
A thorough and impartial review of the incident captured on video.
Greater transparency regarding the department’s policies governing emergency vehicle operation and traffic violations.
Meaningful accountability when officers operate vehicles in a manner that unnecessarily endangers the public.
Review of patterns of police vehicle use, including unnecessary speeding or aggressive driving when no apparent emergency exists.
Clear standards ensuring that officers are not treated as though they are above the traffic laws they enforce.
Greater transparency in how complaints involving police driving are investigated and resolved.
Accountability should not depend on who is behind the wheel.
A badge comes with authority—but it also comes with responsibility.
Coconut Creek residents deserve to know that when they are driving down their own streets, the people entrusted with protecting them are not unnecessarily putting them in danger.
We deserve transparency.
We deserve accountability.
And we deserve officers who respect the same laws they expect the rest of us to follow.
