I am writing this with a heavy heart, for my life was forever altered by an unspeakable act of violence and cruelty. Charles Morgan, pled guilty to three counts of aggravated animal cruelty and two counts of arson. He will be sentenced on August 17th in Screven County Georgia. With an offer of 20 years do only 3 years. He has been free on bond only serving 1 week in jail for his crimes.

This man, who took three of my beloved dogs,  orchestrated a day of terror that haunts our neighborhood to this day. The biggest concern is he could have killed a person or even a child if someone had been home. He had no idea if the house was empty. He didn't care. He did know my dogs were inside. He did intend to murder them and anyone else who was home. He has no compassion for human life. He is a danger to the community and himself. 

In a calculated attack, Morgan burned down not only my neighbor's camper but then, in a fit of malice, set fire to my home. My 5 dogs were inside. Two, by some miracle, survived with extreme PSTD and burns throughout their bodies.  The other three burned alive and were pulled out by firefighters also risking their own lives battling the fire that Charles started that day. They are laid to rest now. But the shadow of fear hangs heavy over our lives. We now live under a shroud of constant dread—haunted by fear and the knowledge that the perpetrator is free to roam among us. How can justice be served when victims like my innocent dogs and my community live in fear while the guilty person could serve a mere three years out of a suggested twenty? He literally walks same roads I drive. Shops at the same stores I shop.  I see him all the time. Going about his business like nothing happened. 

Statistics from the National Fire Protection Association show that arson results in $1 billion in direct property damage each year in the U.S. However, no dollar amount can capture the emotional devastation left in its wake. Moreover, animal cruelty cases where individuals purposefully harm animals with fire highlight an alarming disconnect from community morals and values. Psychological studies have shown a direct correlation between animal cruelty and further aggressive criminal acts against humans.

Our local government and judicial system must take a stand. We cannot allow an individual with such malicious intent to reside unchecked amongst us. We owe it to the memory of my pets and the safety of our community to ensure such atrocities are rightfully punished. Let us urge the prosecutors, judges, and lawmakers in our area to ensure Morgan faces the appropriate consequences for his despicable actions.

We need a justice system that holds such offenses accountable with appropriate sentences reflective of the harm inflicted. We cannot simply turn a blind eye and allow a potential threat to continue terrorizing a community. This is a call to action for those who believe in justice and safety.
