The Issue

Walking along 7th Street in Camden should be a peaceful experience, especially for our children on their daily route to school. Unfortunately, many kids are exposed to distressing scenes involving people consuming drugs in public parks. These scenarios, tied to the local methadone clinic’s presence, are far from the kind of environmental upbringing any child deserves.

The parks, once safe havens for children to play freely, now bear the daunting presence of used needles and loitering individuals. Their litter and disturbances have turned these spaces into areas parents grow wary of, due to the potential dangers lurking in plain sight. The methadone clinic in our community, intended to aid those battling addiction, currently lacks the governance needed to curb these disruptions.

Methadone clinics have a significant responsibility towards the community they are part of. To truly aid recovery, they must provide structured rehabilitation services that guide individuals towards a life off drugs. It is not enough to substitute one substance for another - the clinic must actively and effectively manage their patients' behaviors and whereabouts, ensuring they do not infringe on the public’s right to safe, clean community spaces.

We demand that the local authorities enforce stricter regulations on the clinic, holding them accountable for their patients’ actions. This includes implementing comprehensive rehab programs that don't just alleviate addiction temporarily but aim for permanent recovery and integration back into society. We also urge increased supervision and accountability measures to deter patients from public drug use and to keep our parks free from debris and disturbances.

Our neighborhood deserves better, and so do our children. By signing this petition, we call on local leaders in Camden, NJ to take urgent action. It's time to restore safety and peace to our community parks and ensure our children can walk to school without the fear of being exposed to drug-related activities. Together, we can make a change for a safer Camden.
