I, a concerned citizen of California, am deeply disturbed by the recent actions of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) in transporting two male mountain lions, L147 and L176, to the Mojave desert outside of their natural habitats. This decision is not only inhumane but also a total outrage that cannot go unnoticed.

As an animal lover and advocate for wildlife conservation, I believe it is our responsibility to protect these magnificent creatures that are an integral part of our state's biodiversity. Mountain lions are crucial in maintaining healthy ecosystems by controlling prey populations and ensuring ecological balance.

The transport of these mountain lions to an unfamiliar environment like the Mojave desert puts their lives at risk. These animals are highly territorial with specific home ranges, which they defend against other males. By forcibly relocating them far away from their natural habitats, CDFW has disrupted their social structures, hunting patterns, and overall well-being.

It is important to note that this incident is not isolated but rather represents a larger issue where mountain lions continually suffer due to human encroachment on their habitats. As urbanization expands rapidly across California, these majestic creatures are left with nowhere to live or hunt for food. This lack of consideration for their livelihoods must be addressed urgently.

To support my concerns about this issue:

1) According to research conducted by Panthera's Teton Cougar Project (2018), habitat fragmentation caused by human activities poses significant threats to mountain lion populations.
2) The Center for Biological Diversity reports that over 100 mountain lions have been killed under depredation permits issued by CDFW between 2017 and 2020.
3) A study published in Conservation Biology (2019) highlights how translocating mountain lions can lead to increased mortality rates and negatively impacts their survival.

It is time for us to demand accountability from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The individuals responsible for this decision must be held accountable for their actions, as they have disregarded the welfare of these mountain lions and failed in their duty to protect our state's wildlife.
