Hold adults accountable for child negligence and abuse
The Issue
In recent years, South Africa has witnessed an alarming increase in cases where children have suffered due to negligence, abuse, or a failure to protect by the very adults who are responsible for their well-being. These cases are not just statistics; they are tragic stories of innocent lives cut short by preventable circumstances.
One particularly heart-wrenching case is that of 11-year-old Jayden Lee Meek, who bravely spoke up about being abused at his school. Despite his cries for help, the school failed to take appropriate action. The negligence ultimately led to a more tragic fate for Jayden, who went missing and was later found deceased in a complex in 2025. His mother was arrested for his alleged murder, highlighting a catastrophic failure at various levels of responsibility.
Equally disturbing is the ongoing case of 2-year-old baby Milano, who went missing on June 30, 2026, right outside his flat. After 55 agonizing days, there have been no answers or significant updates from the South African Police Service (SAPS). Each day that passes increases the pain and uncertainty faced by Milano’s family, leaving them in the dark as to how this could happen, and who will be held accountable for this negligence.
These are not just isolated incidents. They represent a systemic problem where children are falling through the cracks due to the negligence and abuse by those tasked with their care. It is imperative that we, as a society, address these issues head-on and take substantial action to safeguard our nation's children.
We demand that legislation be introduced or enforced more strictly to ensure accountability for adults responsible for children when negligence or abuse is proven. This would include schools, childcare facilities, and homes where preventable harm is inflicted upon a child. Additionally, SAPS must improve their response times and transparency in cases of missing children to avoid the excruciating delays and lack of communication that leaves families without closure.
Our children deserve to grow up in safe and nurturing environments, and it is our collective duty to protect them. We cannot allow another child to suffer due to negligence or abuse. By signing this petition, you urge South African lawmakers and authorities to implement strong measures that ensure accountability and justice for every child who falls victim to preventable harm.
Please sign this petition to hold responsible adults accountable and demand justice for our children. Together, we can make a difference and ensure a safer future for every child."
