Sadly I had a very loving pregnant Great Dane that we cared for her whole life. She was such a great dog and for us, her going to have puppies was an exciting and new experience we wanted to face. Her name was Hazel. The adventure we were going to go on was supposed to be a miracle type journey in learning about these pups coming into the world but instead, we have found ourselves heartbroken at the trouble we have had to face. We owned Hazel and the father of her pups. On March 21st Hazel went into labor during the school day. She had given birth to one puppy but then she couldn't continue and my mother, Sarah Hicko, had taken her into emergency C-section at the Hobart Animal Clinic. The section was performed by Dr. Schafer at the Clinic and we were under the impression she was healthy and there were no problems with the c-section. At home though, we found her not able to get up or move well at all and when we finally got her to stand she collapsed. My mother immediately called the Clinic and they told us this is normal, don't bring her in, and to physically pick her up and mover her back into the kiddy pool we had her in with the puppies. That night our dog died between 1 and 2 a.m. in the morning leaving us with 6 pups to care for ourselves. After calling the clinic to inform them of her death they told us that it could not have been anything they had done, that she must have had some underlying disease but before her c-section earlier that day they explained to us how healthy she was, so my mother and stepdad, Kevin Barney, took Hazel's body to Purdue veterinarian hospital for a Necropsy. On March 26th we received the Necropsy results that explained how all of her internal stitches were very loose and she internally bleeds to death from the moment she was awaken from surgery at the fault of Dr. Schafer. That was the incident we faced with the puppies mother but now we have 6 pups that we got a foster mom (a pitbull named Rita) to help us feed while we continued to bottle feed them. The pups though had a very hard time. They were weak and starving because Rita didn't take to them to feed very well. We could only get her to do it under force. We lost one the other night from ammonia and on April 11th, the pups at 3 weeks old, were taken to the vet because they fell sickly. 2 of them needed to be hospitalized but Hobart Animal Clinic demanded a $1500 down payment for them to be cared for. We don't have that kind of money to just throw down so those pups were goners if we didn't sign them over to Dr. Schafer. Which we were pushed to do so after telling them that we'd take them home and care for them as best we could until they died. We were in tears after the first pups death then we were being forced to pay an amount we couldn't reach at the moment or give them up. These puppies were not those of waiting for a home, no, these puppies had homes and I'm sorry to say but the heartbreak my siblings, parents, and I are feeling are horrible. After so much pushing, my mom finally signed them over but all we asked for was for them to give us some help since they had already inadvertently killed their mother. And to add onto that we had a 2nd puppy did in the clinic where they refused to give us a box to put his body in or keed the towel he was wrapped in. They instead took the towel out of our hands and told us how they need that back. We have 4 puppies alive at the moment, two of which we are being refused any knowledge of their well being and 2 we have at home. I'm sorry to say but this is an absolutely traumatizing event to happen to us due to the Hobart Animal Clinic not giving us the help we need. I feel as though, they murdered our beloved dog and stole our puppies away. I'm asking for help on your end to help us receive our puppies back with the care they needed free of charge. I know this seems like a lot to ask for, but after the events, I and my family had to face and the lose of a pet that we considered family, I think that's the least they could do.
