Why this petition matters

Started by Debbie Staton

Let me start with the backstory of Hog Mountain and why this is important to our community.

There aren't many reminders of Hog Mountain, one reminder is the sign in our community, which is at the intersection of Ga. 324 and Ga. 124/Braselton Highway.

Hog Mountain was one of the oldest communities in Gwinnett County, dating back to 1812, when settlers moved into the area and built Fort Daniel to protect them from Native Americans.

The fort provided security, which led to business.

Farmers brought their pigs to the community’s market, which most likely led to its name.

An inn called the Hog Mountain House, was built. Which was the first hotel in the county. The Hog Mountain Baptist Church opened in 1854 and the community was a stop on the stagecoach service between Monticello and Gainesville, and Stone Mountain and Gainesville, according to the Gwinnett Historical Society’s website.

The Hog Mountain sign is one of the final landmarks left in our community. I’m 42 and my entire life I have passed this sign. A member of the community moved it to their home for many years, after the store where the sign is located went out of business. The sign was recently moved back where it belongs on the corner of 124 and 324. There is a new business at the corner which has taken it upon themselves to paint the hog to match their store. The previously Black and White Hog is now purple. We want this to be restored. It’s a historical landmark and should not be altered.

Please help me by signing this petition, which will be sent to the PopShelf corporate offices, to restore the Hog back to its original colors.
