In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, One God. Amen.
His Holiness Pope Tawadros II
The Holy Synod of the Coptic Orthodox Church
The hearts of the youth in North America are crying and reaching out to Your Holiness and the members of the Holy Synod concerning the martyrdom of the twenty-one Coptic Christians in Libya that was brought to light on the beginning of the Great Lent, through a video created by the ISIL terrorist group, showing their heinous execution in a brutal and theatrical manner. As members of the one body of the Church, we send our condolences to the families of the martyrs and to every Coptic Christian in the world since “...if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it” (1 Corinthians 12:26). We also ask for their martyrdom to be recognized and for their sainthood to be canonized to honor that they kept our Orthodox faith to the last breath, teaching us by their death that we must also struggle and enter through the narrow gate regardless of the difficulties that we may face.
Each one of the signatures attached represents a heart that has been torn and is eagerly awaiting the commemoration of these martyrs in our Church and her Synaxarium. Their prayers and blessings are needed as we, the youth living in the West, face daily opportunities to carry our cross; yet we deny it and continue following the wide road that has led many to destruction. The courageousness and steadfast faith presented by these martyrs only strengthened our faith and provided a modern day example of what it means to be cross-bearers. Not only did they awaken us from our slumber of sleep, but they have also given us strength and courage, that if they boldly faced death, we too could face our daily temptations with full struggle and effort. It is our prayer that their sacrificed lives may teach us to live sacrificial lives.
We pray that Your Holiness and the holy Synod can feel our hearts yearning for this request to become a reality so that we may continue to be proud of our genealogy of saints and can teach our children that martyrdom has not ended but rather continues to flourish by bringing more people to the true faith through the true actions of the believers. Our hearts and prayers also go out to all the martyrs and the families that have been affected by the atrocities of the ISIL. We pray that this proposal be used as precedence for all those martyrs that have come before, and for the ones that are to come.
