PLEASE KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF ETHIOPIA
The Issue
The genesis of the Tigray armed conflict between the Ethiopian Defense Forces (ENDF) and Tigray Liberation Front (TPLF) is the treasonous act on part of TPLF in a fateful night of November 4 2020, where TPLF attacked unsuspecting members of the Ethiopian Federal forces in Tigray. Based on their ethnic origins, hundreds of proud Ethiopian soldiers were attacked, tortured, and killed.
The leadership of TPLF proudly declared the attack it carried was on the principle “anticipatory Self Defense”, but yet this horrendous act of treason was brushed aside by the great powers that began almost immediately by characterizing it as “war of choice” by the federal government of Ethiopia. The Western media was quick to propagate the state false narratives, a downright calculated campaign of falsehood that parallels the lies of “Weapon of Mass Destruction in Iraq”. Thankfully, only the United Nation spelled out the truth what took place on that terrible night of November 4 which was coordinated while the world was preoccupied with the United States presidential election. We are also inspired by His Holiness, Pope Francis in addressing faith and justice regarding children and the family.
The US, however, has lost its credibility as impartial power to negotiate or mediate in any disputes that have to do with Ethiopia. In a span of less than 3 years, US proved to stand against the interest of Ethiopia. First under the Trump administration during the GERD negotiation between Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt. More recently, during the unfolding Tigray crisis where the Biden administration’s complete and resolute stance in support of TPLF against a nation who has paid the ultimate price in defending the security interest of the United States and its allies.
In the most highly choreographed narrative, the administration has developed a win-win defense argument to benefit the TPLF. When ENDF forces push forward successfully in the law enforcement operation, TPLF is presented as the underdog and the ENDF forces are unabatedly vilified as “gross Human Right Violators”. When TPLF appears to be the winner such as occupying the already vacated Mekele, the ENDF forces are castigated as rag tag soldiers being routed by the "seasoned guerrilla" fighters.
Despite such unbalanced narrative, the world had welcomed Ethiopian unilateral ceasefire as the first breakthrough for peace since the conflict began. Instead of using this historic opportunity for self-reflection, TPLF went to overdrive enabled by western powers to commit incalculable crimes against Tigrayan civilians not affiliated with TPLF with immeasurable vengeance. People of Enderta and Raya paid a very high price for their association with the Tigray Provisional Administration that pulled out from Mekele with ENDF.
Furthermore, the Ceasefire did not deter TPLF from immediately marching into the Amhara regions including Wolkait Tsegede, Raya and part of the Afar regions which TPLF for 30 years had made the most destitute of all regions. TPLF went into the Afar war front with an army of Child soldiers which is an international war crime clearly demonstrating the most horrendous act of inhumanity by TPLF against the people of Tigray. The Western media again is conveniently silent and the world is shocked by its selective outrage.
It is now clear the Western enablers plan is to provide all out support for TPLF in order for the terrorist group gain a significant military advantage in the battlefield that will have negotiating leverage with the Federal Government. However, this half-baked plan did not materialize and TPLF is on the losing side in its recent military offenses. The old falsehood "Tigray Genocide" is now recycled back on the one hand while TPLF's enablers are out talking about "compromise" and "negotiations". To recall history, President Abraham Lincoln who refused to negotiate with the rebel, was unabatedly pressured to do the same in the fight to save the union and end slavery.
There is a democratically elected government in Addis Ababa today that is enjoying a popular support. The road to Ethiopia’s stability is firmly charted by the millions of Ethiopians that chose to take a bold and a daring step into democracy. The entire Ethiopian people regardless ethnic or religious differences have come into a single indivisible patriotic front to put down the treasonous attack of TPLF. They are standing in unison for Ethiopia’s sovereignty. Patriotic and democratic forces say the people of Tigray must be unshackled from TPLF’s known tyranny and move on to chart its future. We trust it shall.
Ethiopian American Civic Council - EACC and Ethiopian American Advocacy EAN declare the treasonous leadership of TPLF must surrender, TPLF disarmed, and the people of Tigray, eventually given a chance to exercise its democratic rights. After all the untold misery it is unforgivable crime to reestablish TPLF back into conventional Ethiopian political space. In this modern era, no state should negotiate with terrorists under any circumstances. Since the effort of ENDF to enforce the rule of law is its national duty no outside force could mediate or claim to have a mandate to do so. Ethiopia's sovereignty is inviolable.
Ethiopian American Civic Council - EACC and Ethiopian American Advocacy EAN also reject all undue pressure against prime minster Dr Abiy Ahmed, a duly elected leader of Ethiopia. Any effort by the United States to undermine Dr. Abiy’s administration; threats; and punitive measure shall be considered as an affront to more than 40,000,000 Ethiopians who have casted their indispensable vote on June 21st, 2021. Therefore, any attempt to force “Regime Change” by any name, shall be considered unapologetic assault on the Ethiopian people and the universal Democratic governance itself.
We call upon the peace-loving forces of the world to stand with Ethiopia today. To say no to appalling forces of darkness that employ child soldiers and use food as a weapon of war against its own people. TPLF despite the effort of Western powers that prop it up is unfit for democracy and peace and a horrifying model for all African countries. We stand with the people of Tigray that is in the last mile of its struggle to do way the forces of darkness in its midst.
