The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) yesterday warned it would stage a four hour token strike on Monday(04) morning over six issues including an alleged attempt to amend the doctors Service Minute without consulting relevant stakeholders. GMOA Secretary Dr Naveen de Zoysa said the union would also protest against the government moves to go ahead with moves to sign the Indo-Sri Lanka Economic and Technological Cooperation Agreement (ETCA) without formulating a national policy on international agreements. Other issues include the violation by the Health Ministry of the National Drug policy, failure on the part of the government to provide national schools for children of doctors, who were on transfer or returning after foreign training, attempts to weaken government service and efforts to influence the Sri Lanka Medical Council regarding the Malabe Private Medical College. Dr. Zoysa said the token strike would commence at 8.00 am on Monday. Maternal and children’s hospitals, cancer hospitals and renal care units would be exempt from the strike. He warned that the consequences would be far worse if relevant authorities failed to take necessary action to resolve the aforesaid issues. (DJ)
