Join the movement to make Sri Lanka a safer place for all its citizens and to prevent hate speech and hate acts from taking away our civil liberties and national peace

Letter to
His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa, The President of Sri Lanka
We, the signatories of this petition, call on His Excellency The President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to protect the liberties of Sri Lanka's minorities and to defend their interests against hate speech and hate acts prevailing in the country.

We urge your Excellency, to consider the following in order to stem the rising tide of anti-minority extremism in the country:

Take decisive action by publicly condemning the hate campaign of extremists and groups targeting minority communities, such as the Bodu Bala Sena and Sinhala Ravaya.

Proclaim publicly that the minorities are equal citizens and equitable stakeholders in the country.

Instruct the law enforcement authorities (police and otherwise) to take necessary action to stop incidents of harassment against minorities and their businesses.

Declare it a criminal offence for hate groups to utilize police forces. Publicly declare it a criminal offence for hate groups to conduct raids into houses, take action against perpetrators of such raids.

Empower the law enforcement authorities (police and otherwise) to respond to instances where such forces try to take the law in to their own hands.

Take action to prompt responsible Media reporting, by providing a conducive environment for the Media to self-regulate, thereby ensuring that it does not propagate the sentiments of hate groups.

Ensure that the controversy surrounding the Halal certification issue is resolved, without it impinging on the rights of those of the public who require the Halal certification.
