Excellency:

We, representatives of Filipino communities and organizations in Northern California, humbly appeal to your Excellency to grant clemency and save the life of Mary Jane Veloso, who has been convicted of drug trafficking by the Indonesian Supreme Court and who now awaits her dismal turn on death row.

Mary Jane is only one of the 6,000 Filipinos who forcibly leave the Philippines everyday due to the worsening poverty and unemployment transpiring in the country. Mary Jane was born to a poor family:  her father was a seasonal worker, while the rest of the family members picked and sold plastics and recyclable materials for a living.  In 2009, with her two children’s future in mind, Mary Jane went to Dubai for a 2-year contract as a household service worker, but left prematurely due to an attempted rape by her employer.

In 2010, Mary Jane left the Philippines again for her family’s sake, eking out a living this time to Malaysia with the help of a friend, Ma. Cristina Serio.  After discovering that there was no job waiting for her there, Mary Jane was tricked into bringing a bag of heroin by Cristina to Indonesia, and consequently was arrested by airport authorities.

Mary Jane then found herself inadequately equipped to defend herself.  She had no translator during her interrogation in Bahasa Indonesia and had an unlicensed translator during her trial.  In addition, her lawyer for the trial was a public defender provided by the police, and not of her own choice. Clearly, she was deprived of proper and sufficient legal assistance.

We ask you to spare the life of Mary Jane, your Excellency.  Mary Jane’s human rights were violated when an international drug trafficking syndicate unscrupulously victimized her. She should not be punished but given justice. It is disheartening to know that Mary Jane has been meted the death penalty while her traffickers and big drug syndicate operators go scot-free.

We appeal to your sense of compassion, your Excellency, as Mary Jane was not only a victim of drug trafficking syndicates.  Mary Jane was also a victim of the conditions that force thousands of Filipinos to leave their homeland despite all the uncertainties and challenges they may face in a foreign land.  We share the pain and suffering Filipino migrant feels when they leave their families and loved ones back home, and feel much more knowing that Mary Jane, who courageously left her country and only wished for a better future for her children, is meted an unjust, untimely and unnecessary death by execution.

Please stop her execution now.
